Whilst on my never ending quest to find a Sokka song, this lip-syncing crack monkey exploded in my brain. The end result - a disturbing cross between Avatar and Flight of the Conchords. Sokka is the prince of parties! You should always make sure he's invited!
Footage from 2x11 and 3x09
This really doesn't count as my third character vid, as I still plan on making something more serious for him. But it certainly was fun to make. ^__^

For anyone interested, Amazon has all three complete books for under $100 (priced at 30 each for the first two seasons and 38 for the third). To anyone who still doesn't have boxsets of the series (guilty, of course), this could be a nice time to snag them. I'm wondering if this is a good price?
(And mods, please kill this if this isn't allowed.)

| How to play with your food |
[11 Jul 2009|06:30am] |

http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2009/07/how-to-play-with-your-food.html posted by Neil
I'm in Chicago right now, for ALA: the annual meeting of the American Library Association. I've been to a couple of them before and have always had a marvellous time -- once, with people like Art Spiegelman and Scott McCloud and Colleen Doran explaining to curious librarians what graphic novels were and why they should have them in their libraries, another time getting to visit New Orleans for the first time Post-Katrina, when I went to two dinners with Poppy Z Brite, and one of them was the first time Poppy's husband, chef Chris DeBarr, ever cooked for me*.
When I was in Melbourne, five years ago, Poppy was a guest of honour with me, and somewhere back then it was decided that we would be going to Alinea, a Chicago restaurant of remarkable coolness. The years went by and I was never in Chicago for long, and Katrina happened, and once Poppy went back to New Orleans she did not want to leave, but we knew one day it would happen.
And tonight it did. Poppy flew up from Chicago and took me to dinner. It was expensive, and, I only discovered at the end of the meal, Poppy was paying. (This is a big public thank you.)
The service and friendliness and sense of enjoyment from the Alinea staff was remarkable. I've had, on rare occasions, food that was as good, and, rarely, I've had food that was better, but I do not ever recall any meal that was as much fun to eat. 23 Courses (hmm, very illuminati) of things that melted or popped or squrunched in your mouth in astounding ways.
I think my favourite not-actually-putting-something-in-my-mouth moment was when the table was covered with bubbling belching dry-ice smoke, and I asked Poppy very nicely if she wouldn't mind saying, "Tonight, my creature, I shall give you Life!" for me, and, bless her, she did.
If anyone reading this is at ALA, I'm doing two signings at the HarperCollins booth 2011, one at 1.00pm on Saturday, the other on 9.00am on Monday (which should have some amusement value). Also a panel on Monday at 1:30pm on the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The rest of the time is filled with interviews, receptions, speeches and such.
I'm actually here to receive the Newbery Medal for The Graveyard Book. Which will be presented on Sunday night, and for which I have written (and already recorded) a speech. (Which will be played if I forget how to talk on Sunday night. It's possible.)
And I want to thank Harper Collins for indulging me, and keeping up the free version of The Graveyard Book on the mousecircus website all that time. You can still listen to (or watch) me read The Graveyard Book, chapter by chapter, across America, at http://www.mousecircus.com/videotour.aspx. You can also buy it.
(And to answer a sharp-eyed questioner, yes, there are a couple of changes in the latest printing of The Graveyard Book; I fixed an error in astronomy I'd made, and a misspelled foreign word, and fixed some paragraphs in the acknowledgments that were truncated in the original US edition.)
(And that reminds me: yes, I will be at San Diego Comic Con briefly on Friday July 24th, to do a panel with Henry Selick about Coraline, and a one hour signing afterwards. I'll be at the Eisner Awards for a bit that night, then will zoom across town to the Benefit concert that Amanda Palmer and Vermillion Lies are doing for the CBLDF.)
*Chris says people have been asking for "The Mezze of Destruction", the code-phrase that tells him they were sent from this blog, at the Green Goddess, and getting special extras -- restaurant Easter Eggs, as it were, and I have been getting happy messages from people who have eaten there who tried it. And, almost needless to say, lived.
Right. Bed.

Had a drawing sesion with the cateatdog guys, and after going thru numerous indiemanga books, this is the final art direction of the would-be comic.

After drawing that, my anti-manga antibody kicked in for a while and resulted in this artfart...
... but everything returned to normal. Phew.
Now can start on proper character sheets for the thing. Nekomata Projekt is go!

| What Goes On In The Caves Stays In The Caves |
[10 Jul 2009|01:32pm] |

Where I Spent The Very Many Years Of A Long And Happy YouthBuilt in the 1920's from the coral rock quarry left over from the building of Coral Gables' many coral entrances and walls, the Venetian Pool was the very hallmark of 'The City Beautiful' and it's tony high high society aspirations to stand out from Miami proper... I was born in Coral Gables in 1954 and raised there. It is no longer the same but still, I miss it terribly. If any part of it has remained much the same it is this world renowned city pool. I didn't realize there were so many youtube videos of the Venetian Pool. There's a great many of them, and deservedly so. It's an incredible place. (Recently renovated yet again, I am saddened to see in these videos that what was once an intricate high dive tower with winding steps and pathways has now been converted to another set of falls. They already had one set next to the caves...) I haven't been back to South Florida in 9 years and am terribly homesick. I have shown plenty of stills of The Venetian Pool to my Lisa and talked much of wishing to take her there, but videos far better convey the wonder of the place. |

| Speaking in text |
[10 Jul 2009|10:09pm] |
So much for writing everyday. ;)
I am in the office these days working on an upcoming Metal Fest in Germany and here in my section is another girl who is working on some other tours. You see, I get my emails in German from a few of our agents and while I rely mostly on a translation software, sometimes it can get a little too complicated for me to comprehend. This girl in my section, she is naturally German, and helps me when I get stuck in such occasions. What I do is copy and paste the alien-to-me-phrases into Skype and send it her way, after I tell her verbally, that I would do so. The funny thing is that, although she is sitting literally not 4 feet away from me, she never opens her mouth to voice the translation but would instead type her response and Skype it back to me. I would then in return say to her "Aaah, so that's what they meant, thanks!!" And she would nod lightly, not really looking at me, but surely (I think) acknowledging me.
It's a little awkward because we're almost sitting next to each other and I can see and hear her typing back to me. Why would she not speak? She is quite the character, really, she speaks in this really small voice I imagine people over the age of 50 would be unable to hear, and it's really difficult to strike up a conversation with her unless you were discussing heavy metal bands, they are her passion. I hear she is one of those metal fans that go right into the mosh pit at concerts. Experiencing the bane of computer technology so close to home is a little scary. It's true that you're less insecure when hiding behind the computer in communicating and socializing. But in my case here, this girl is nowhere close from physically hiding behind her computer as I can see her from all angles of my seat!! XD And yet she would rather speak to me in text.
With the festival starting in 2 weeks I have been working day and night non-stop. We have just about 105 bands this year so it's not exactly a walk in the breeze. I still make time for at least one episode of Flight Of The Conchords before I sleep every day, just to keep my life as musical as possible. I had planned to sleep-in tomorrow but it looks like I will need to make a trip out to IKEA early in the morning as some Scientology gathering is happening in town, and traffic will be horrendous all afternoon. Damn, I just looked into my bag and it looks like something just took a dump in there. I really need to reorganize all my things.

Title: wrong until you make it right Character(s): Katara, Zuko, Jet Pairing(s): Zuko/Katara, hints of Katara/Jet Rating: PG Warning: Nada limonada, literally, because AU means ignoring things like canon. Summary: AU And there they (Katara Hong, Zuko Hsu) meet (order tea, rabidly insult, coldly negotiate). Notes: Rather than Five Ways ____ and ____ Never Met, it’s three. College AU because I’m just badass (and/or lazy, take your pick) like that. The names were chosen because of their meaning, if they make no sense and/or sound ridiculous . . . er. That’s too bad. I feel your pain.
(“You are so damn annoying,” she tells him, and her hair is wet from swim team and Zuko’s ribs are aching from her delivery, and he flicks a look at her from underneath his eyelashes because it kind of hurts to look at her full on.)

Comic-Con is bearing down fast. Faster than I am comfortable with.
Tomorrow will be the first of four appearances that I'll be doing this summer for the local Indigo bookstore branches, as part of their Summer Reading series. Since this is (kind of?) a new thing for them, I'm a little apprehensive that it'll be one of those things where I'll be talking to an audience of just a couple of people. But in the long term, we're all hoping this will pay off, once word gets out that Indigo is doing Good Things for the younger readers. So, um, yeah. Come check it out, if you have an afternoon to spare.

The last two pages of North World have had some little nods to various things. A reader asked me to list them, but I don't want to!
I'd rather have you guys tell me what I'm referencing. The first one to answer per reference (specify, I know I double ref'd one thing) I'll do a little sketch request and post it in reply (I'm not mailing it though, sorry), and nothing too crazy please.
So, post a comment pointing out one of the reference and where it's from and request a drawing. No repeats, just one.

Howdy folks, just popping in to say that I'm offering to write comment ficlets for anyone who'd like 'em. (Basically just like what banditjoeykuba, suzukiblu, and beckyh2112 have offered.) The post is over here; feel free to hop over and request any pairings you'd like. No strings attached, (basically) no limits, and good times for all! Or, y'know. At least some fic. (I know, you guys are probably tired of these memes, but this sounds like too much fun to pass up. Forgive me.)

Hi again! x)
A couple of people expressed interest in this in my last post so I thought I'd throw it out there.
If I were to draw up a Discworld-themed poster:
Poll #1427034 Posters
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All Would you want one? What would you want the theme of it to be?
I didn't include a Witches theme because I've only read 1 Witch book, other than the Tiffany Aching books. x) And I didn't include Tiffany or the Feegles because I don't want to draw hundreds of Feegles, haha. I don't know how Paul Kidby does it.
For this I would make a completely new fully drawn illustration but before I do I just want to know if people would want one! :p How this would work would be this: I show you guys the finished image, if you like, you send $5 (not sure on this price yet) to my PayPal, and I email you a very very high-resolution version of the image. This way... It doesn't even have to be a poster! You can go to Zazzle or wherever you feel comfortable (this place is actually EXCELLENT if you want a very big poster) and have it printed to your liking. Also, you wouldn't have to worry about shipping costs from me since I live in Canada. It would cost a bundle, heh. D:
Also, it wouldn't have to be just this one image! If you saw something in my last post that you liked, go ahead and ask and I can send you a high-res file. :D
Anyway! Just a little thought I had. :p I don't have a job at the moment and I haven't been having much luck with commissions. And with the truly overwhelming response I got (I wasn't expecting so many comments! You guys are TOO nice <3) I thought I'd give this a shot.
Also, mods, if this kind of post isn't okay (selling art that I've done that contains copyrighted characters?) feel free to remove it. D:
EDIT: I've been looking up a lot of different things on the legality of this. Even if I don't put the names of anyone or anything on the drawings, the likeness of the characters are apparently still copyrighted. But... They're characters in a book, right? So I'm not sure on that. Even though my designs are heavily inspired by Paul Kidby's art, is that official? I don't know... I'll wait and see if enough people want it and, I dunno, try and contact Terry Pratchett? X) Is this possible?
Or I could make it a Poster By Donation kinda thing. "Help this poor starving artist!"
EDIT THE SECOND: I sent an email to Colin Smythe (thank you to djelibeybi_meg !) I sure hope this works out, it looks like a lot of you would like one! :D
